Uber Settles With Hollywood Woman Alleging Driver Groped Her

A Hollywood woman sued Uber, alleging a driver sexually assaulted her while driving on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A woman who alleged that an Uber Technologies Inc. driver sexually assaulted her in 2017 settled her lawsuit with the ride- hailing company, court papers obtained Thursday show.

The plaintiff, identified only as Jane Doe, alleged in her Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit filed Sept. 26 that a driver named Fernando sexually assaulted her on June 15 after picking her and two friends up after they ate at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Hollywood. She alleged he put his hand beneath her bra and fondled her breasts.

Her lawyer, Lisa Bloom, filed court papers March 7 stating that the case was resolved. No terms were divulged.

Doe alleged that she pushed the driver away when he began touching her, but that he continued the assault while driving on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway. Her court papers allege that Uber responded to her report of the assault by saying, "Do whatever you want about the incident."

One of the plaintiff's friends later realized she left her cell phone in the car, and when they called the phone's number, the driver answered and demanded $50 for its return, according to the suit.

The complaint alleged Uber did not do a proper background check on the driver and did not ask for employment references.
