Movies Out This Weekend
โSicario: Day of the Soldadoโ โ Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, directed by Stefano Sollima
The sequel to 2015โs โSicarioโ reunites Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin as two anti-hero protagonists who venture deep into the merciless border world of the drug trade. This time around, the stakes are even higher and very personal.
When CIA agent Matt Graver (Brolin) is enlisted to start a feud between drug lords to ultimately win the drug war on the US-Mexico border, he recruits assassin Alejandro (Del Torro) to kidnap a kingpinโs young daughter Isabel (Isabella Moner) in order to exacerbate an already volatile situation.
Alejandro successfully executes the deed, but when the young girl is seen as collateral damage, the two men go toe-to-toe while Isabelโs life hangs in the balance.
See it. With a taut screenplay, Sollimaโs solid direction and the leadsโ ardent performances, the film compels us to question our moral compass in the process.

โUncle Drewโ โ Kyrie Irving, Shaquille OโNeil, directed by Charles Stone III
Adapted from a series of soft drink commercials and web-episodes, Charles Stone IIIโs โUncle Drewโ is about the game of basketball and how it relates to family, friendship and the drive to be the best โ regardless of age.
In the film, Lil Rel Howery plays Dax, a young man who has been on a life-long losing streak, until he suddenly stumbles upon the basketball legend Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving). Wasting no time, Dax convinces the icon to join forces with him to assemble a last-minute squad and enter the famous basketball tournament, The Rucker Classic.
What ensues is a road trip that sets off a series of events that change Dax's life forever.
See it. โUncle Drewโ is full of contagious fun and lifelong lessons. This film certainly goes beyond basketball fouls and alley-oops.
Watch the trailer:
โLeave No Traceโ โ Ben Foster, Thomasin McKenzie, directed by Debra Granik
The latest feature of writer-director Debra Granik is based on Peter Rockโs fictionalized tale about survivalism, titled โMy Abandonment.โ
In the movie, Ben Foster plays Will, a veteran who lives with his teenage daughter Tom (Thomasin McKenzie) in a makeshift wilderness camp in the Pacific Northwest. Using their outdoor living skills, they carve out a life almost entirely off the grid and invisible to the outside world.
Both are extremely happy โ that is, until their existence in the woods gets discovered by a park visitor, causing the father-daughter duo to get evicted. Can they now survive in and adapt to society, which is totally different from their peaceful, rudimentary enclave?
See it. Foster and McKenzie deliver brilliant performances, while Granikโs storytelling is insightful and powerful.
