What To Watch This Weekend: 'The Girl In The Spider's Web,' More

This weekend, movie theaters will welcome new releases in the thriller, biopic, and animation genres.

The latest installment of the "Dragon Tattoo" series comes to life in "The Girl In The Spider's Web," starring Claire Foy as the dragon-tattooed cyber-hacker Lisbeth Salander.

In the mood for a winning zombie-horror film? Look no further than "Overlord," in which Jovan Adepo plays a paratrooper fighting for his life.

The biopic "The Front Runner" shines a light on a politician Gary Hart's (Hugh Jackman) promising career gone awry.

And since it's never too early for Yuletide movies, "The Grinch" also makes its debut this weekend, starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role.

Here's what to see and what to skip this weekend:

"The Girl In The Spider's Web" — Claire Foy, Sylvia Hoeks, directed by Fede Alvarez

The latest installment of the “Dragon Tattoo” franchise stars Claire Foy as the tattooed misfit Lisbeth Salander, a cyber-mercenary who will stop at nothing to defend the vulnerable and the wronged.

The film takes place three years after the events of “Dragon Tattoo,” opening with Lisbeth saving battered women and punishing their perpetrators. Her next mission requires her to steal a computer program that has the capability to hack any nuclear missile system in the world.

Lisbeth succeeds, but a secret organization on her trail takes the coveted data, torches her apartment and leaves her for dead. Luckily, she survives, and it's not long before she goes on a perilous journey to find her assailants, revealing her mysterious past while doing so.

See it. Foy delivers a relentless, ironclad warrior, though the screenplay is difficult to follow at times.

“The Grinch” — Benedict Cumberbatch, Rashida Jones, directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier

Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier’s animated film is the third movie adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s 1957 children’s book, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” and is narrated by Pharrell Williams.

This particular remake sheds light on the origins of the Grinch (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), a mean, green grouch who lives high atop Mount Crumpet with his beloved dog Max.

The unpleasant Grinch loathes the Whos in Whoville and their annual celebration of Christmas. Without hesitation, he decides to spoil their Yuletide celebrations this year by stealing all their presents and decorations.

Skip it. The computer rendition lacks exciting vibes, and the script languishes with plot holes.

“Overlord” — Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, directed by Julius Avery

Julius Avery delivers a wartime drama fueled by panic and horror. Set during World War II, the film transports audiences to an underworld filled with zombie-like creatures.

On the eve of D-Day, a squad of American paratroopers is sent to France to end the Third Reich rule. But their plane is attacked before reaching their target, leaving the soldiers trapped behind enemy lines in a Nazi-occupied village.

As they plan their assault, soldier Boyce (Jovan Adepo) unearths a mysterious lab dedicated to the production of a special serum that makes the dead undead and unstoppable. What ensues is a series of events that will leave Boyce and his fellow G.I.s fighting for their lives!

See it. The horror film is wildly zombie-licious, notwithstanding its sluggish start.

“The Front Runner” — Hugh Jackman, Vera Farmiga, directed by Jason Reitman

Jason Reitman’s biopic chronicles the rise and fall of the charismatic politician Gary Hart, based on Matt Bai’s book, “All The Truth is Out.” The film, which centers on the politician’s downfall, stars Hugh Jackman in the titular role.

In the spring of 1987, Colorado Senator Gary Hart emerges as the widely-viewed front runner in the race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. However, a few weeks later he falls from grace in a spectacular fashion, and reports of an extramarital affair lead to his withdrawal from the race. Suddenly, his very promising political career is over.

See it. Jackman’s excellent performance and Reitman’s compelling direction is a winning combination that delivers much gusto.
