What To Watch This Weekend: 'How To Train Your Dragon 3' And More

This weekend, two exciting new releases are headed to theaters. In "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World," Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera reprise their roles as best friends facing the prospect of marriage — and threats to their village looming ahead!

Meanwhile, young adult novel "The Changeover" comes to life on the big screen, starring Erana James as a teenager with supernatural powers battling an ancient dark force.

Opening This Weekend

“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” — Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett; directed by Dean DeBlois

Jay Baruchel and America Fererra lead the returning cast of the final “How to Train Your Dragon” installment, reprising their roles as best friends Hiccup and Astrid. Also returning for the final chapter is writer-director Dean DeBlois.

In "The Hidden World," Hiccup is the new chief of the village of Berk, where Vikings and dragons coexist in harmony. As Hiccup settles into his new role, excitement builds over his prospective marriage to Astrid on the horizon. However, danger looms ahead as hunters target the dragons, threatening Berk’s utopian way of life. Will the couple ever get married? Will Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, be able to save Berk from this new threat?

See it. Audiences can feast their eyes on a dazzling animation and relish the exciting conclusion to the trilogy.

“The Changeover” — Timothy Spall, Melanie Lynskey, Erana James; directed by Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie

A story about family and love, “The Changeover” is based on Margaret Mahy’s best-selling YA novel of the same name.

Set in Christchurch, New Zealand, the film centers on Laura Chant (Erana James), a teenager who is still struggling to cope with the death of her father. When Laura's single mom, Kate (Melanie Lynskey), goes to work to make ends meet, the 16-year-old is left behind to look after her little brother, Jacko (Benji Purchase).

One day Laura encounters a mysterious man named Braque (Timothy Spall), who suddenly takes a special interest in Jacko. As the story unfolds, Braque manifests himself as an evil spirit threatening their family's peace and quiet. In the process, Laura discovers her supernatural powers and will now have to race against time to save her brother from dark forces. Will she prevail?

See it. Though the final act is somewhat muddled, the movie, overall, is worth a trip to the theaters.
