Shirley Nakawatase Elected Chair of San Diego Regional Center

Imperial Beach resident Shirley Nakawatase has been elected as the chair of the board of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Developmental Services for a one-year term.

The San Diego Regional Center is a nonprofit service of San Diego-Imperial Counties Developmental Services Inc. and is a beacon in the community for information and services for persons with developmental disabilities living in San Diego and Imperial counties. The organization governs virtually all services to the developmentally disabled on behalf of both counties.The Regional Center is the largest nonprofit agency in San Diego County and was recently featured in the San Diego Business Journal.

"I am honored to step into this position," Nakawatase said. "There is a huge amount of good work to do to support the developmentally disabled and I am looking forward to a bright future as we get started this year."

Nakawatase has been involved with the regional center for many years and this is her fourth year serving on the board. As the chair of the board, Nakawatase is on all of the center’s committees as the chair.

Nakawatase’s goals for the year include improving the level of communication between service providers and those who need service and to raising awareness of regional center services in Southern California.

Shirley Nakawatase is the president of Nakawatase & Co. CPAs, an accounting practice founded in 1991 in Imperial Beach. Active in Kiwanis International, the City of Imperial Beach and Girl Scouts San Diego-Imperial Council, Nakawatase is a licensed CPA and also serves as a business development consultant to many of her clients.
