New Moms Groups Emerge in Imperial Beach

Stroller Strides, a fitness class offered by the company Fit4Mom that allows parents to bring their baby with them to workout, will hold their first class in Imperial Beach Tuesday.

Along with a free workout, moms can win raffle prizes, hear the music of Hullabaloo Band and enjoy free food and drinks. A registration fee for the course which costs $60 a month will be waived for those who attend the first class Tuesday.

Classes will meet in Dunes Park Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays starting Sept. 12.

Fit4Mom, which is active in several other parts of San Diego, joins Mommas of IB on a short list of recently established groups specifically for local mothers.

It's pretty simple, said Molly Goforth, who started the Mommas of IB group on meetup.com with another local mom in late June: "If moms don't have an outlet to talk about issues they will go crazy!"

"Being a mom is a 24/7 job that never stops and its nice to know that other moms deal with the same issues and that you are not alone," she said. "Having support within our community coming from other moms keeps your sanity and helps build a stronger sense of community."

Mommas of IB is a free group that takes trips together to the park, beach, zoo, toddler story time at the library and other events. The group has grown from 10 to 37 members since June, and includes a mix of Navy, stay at home and working moms. Dads can also join.

Mommas of IB moms are approximately in their mid-20 to late 30s. Kids in the group range from a few months old up to 8- or 9-years-old, but the majority are between ages 0-4, Goforth said.

Goforth moved to Imperial Beach from Point Loma last fall.

"Since I am new to the area and have a newborn I was just still settling down when this group was started," she said.

While giving kids a chance to "burn off their everlasting energy" and make friends with other people their age, the groups gives parents the opportunity to interact with adults. 

"Moms need an outlet and other mom friends are exactly what they need! Mommas of IB meetup opens the door and makes communication easier knowing that all the Moms attend the meetups for similar reasons," Goforth said.
