St. Francis Students Earn National Honors

Six seniors have been named as Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program, while a seventh earned the honor of National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.

Principal, Tom Moran, has announced that St. Francis High School seniors Lance Bird, Jeffrey Brown, Jeremy Koch, Kevin O’Toole, Jackson Warner, and Matthew Wellnitz have been named as Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

The College Board is pleased to announce that Delfin “Andy” Acosta, a senior at St. Francis High School, has been selected as a 2011-12 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) Scholar.

The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. This year, the NHRP is recognizing nearly 5,000 students selected from a pool of over 235,000 who took the 2010 PSAT/NMSQT/PAA and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino. Students recognized by the NHRP are at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino (based on the program’s definition) and have achieved a minimum PSAT/NMSQT/PAA score for their region. Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars, and those with GPAs of 3.0 to 3.49 are designated as Honorable Mentions.
