The body of the unfortunate sea creature spanned roughly 1.5-feet in length and attracted the attention of curious beach-goers Tuesday morning.

The fish, identified as a California sheephead, a species found from Monterey Bay to the Gulf of California, Mexico. They feed on sea urchins, mollusks and crustaceans — which largely explain the large teeth peering from its open mouth.

The body of the fish remained on the shoreline for some of Tuesday afternoon before it was encountered by a Laguna Beach Police Department Ranger, who determined that the best course of action was to return the fish home to the sea.
