Body Found Near Newport Pier ID'd As Laguna Beach Man

The man was found fully clothed in the water roughly 50 yards from the pier, authorities said.

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — A man's body found in the waters near Newport Pier was identified as a Laguna Beach resident, the Orange County Sheriff's Department reported.

Newport Beach police were called to the scene at the pier on Jan. 8 at 12:38 p.m. after a bystander notified police of the deceased man in the water, according to the department.

The victim was identified as 83-year-old James Godfrey Bruni, of Laguna Beach, authorities said.

The circumstances surrounding Bruni's death were under investigation.
