City Of Laguna Beach Sees Steep Drop In Crime For 4th Straight Year

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — For the fourth year in a row, the Laguna Beach Police Department has seen a steep reduction in crime as a result of police efforts.

According to the Laguna Beach Police Department, authorities have successfully reduced crime overall, with a 23 percent decrease in FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Part 1 crimes in 2024 compared to 2023, a 29 percent reduction compared to 2022 and a 30 percent reduction compared to 2021.

In 2024, auto thefts decreased by 40 percent, from 35 incidents in 2023 to just 21 in 2024, police said. Larceny was also down in Laguna Beach, with 173 reported thefts — a 23 percent decrease from the previous year, resulting in 52 fewer theft victims, according to police.

In addition, commercial and residential burglaries decreased by 28 percent, from 46 in 2023 to 33 in 2024.

"The continued decline in crime is the direct result of our proactive policing strategies, community engagement, and data-driven approach to crime prevention," LBPD Chief Jim Calvert said. "By leveraging technology, data-led policing and the dedication of our officers and professional staff, we remain committed to ensuring Laguna Beach remains a safe and welcoming community for all."

In regard to violent crime, 2024 robbery incidents decreased by three when compared to 2023, while aggravated assaults increased by four, with a quarter of all aggravated assault cases related to domestic violence.

Of nine reported robberies in 2024, four involved firearms and five occurred through force or fear, police said.
