Community Reminded to Prep for Potential Floods

The cooler weather and rain brings chances for flooding, especially in the canyon areas, and the city of Laguna Beach wants residents to be prepared.

Heavy rain storms are often unpredictable, and have known to strike Laguna Beach from December through February. In a city memo, officials said previous winter seasons including December 2010 resulted in fast running waters escaping Laguna Canyon Channel at Beach Street, causing flooding up to two feet deep along Broadway and Ocean avenues.

Business owners are encouraged to install flood gates --wooden or fiberglass slats--at doorway entries after hours when storms are expected, and to invest in sandbags to help prevent flooding.

While the city does not provide filled sandbags for the pubic, during the winter months empty sandbags are available at the fire stations in Laguna Beach. Ganahl Lumber, at 1765 Laguna Canyon Rd., and Home Depot, at 24332 El Toro Rd., have sandbags available to the public. Fill sand is always available at Larry's Building Materials, 1975 Laguna Canyon Rd.
