LAGUNA BEACH, CA — A historic hotel on the coast of Orange County is under fire for attempting to create a private beach area for its guests in violation of California state law, SFGate reported.

Hotel Laguna, an iconic landmark located along the Pacific Coast Highway for upwards of a century, is accused of violating California's Coastal Act by building a sand berm and placing signage and lounge chairs on a public stretch of sand, according to the report.

The scrutiny has been heard on social media platforms, which have been lively with commentary and videos in recent weeks. Videos show a raised sand barrier to protected the area, which is raked and furnished with lounge chairs.
