Laguna Beach Arts Commission To Review Public Art Proposal

On Monday, Laguna Beach's arts commission begins the review process of a new proposal for an Art in Public Places installation.

LAGUNA BEACH, CA -- On Monday, Laguna Beach's arts commission begins the review process of a proposal by artist Marc Fornes for an Art in Public Places installation at the Village Entrance.

The meeting, which is open to the public, is set for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 12 in the City Council chambers, 505 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach.

In his proposal, Fornes says that he envisions "a multi-lobed, fanning pavilion marking the doorway into the vibrant city," and that "at this iconic entrance where canyon meets sea leading into the city center, we will create a moment of captivation that embodies the spirit and rich culture of Laguna Beach."

The pavilion, he said, would become home to gatherings casual and formal, large and small.

"In the more secluded seating cove, visitors will find a place for tranquil group activities, discussion and introspection," states the proposal. "An open form performance area with overflow regions for large gatherings marks the opposite end of the space. Canopies of intersecting arcs upheld by slim columns will underscore a place for the expansion of diverse arts scene in Laguna Beach. We envision concerts, picnics after a visit to the Market, and a place to rest your feet after a full day of festival activities."

"Ultimately, our design aims to highlight the existing natural beauty, history and visual culture of Laguna Beach," the proposal continues. "The structure is an articulation of meeting points; a nexus nestled at the entrance to the city."
