Laguna Beach Names New Marine Safety Chief
The outgoing chief is retiring after 44 years with the Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department.

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — The longtime chief of Laguna Beach's Marine Safety Department will retire next month after more than four decades of service, city officials announced this week.
Kevin Snow began his career as a rookie lifeguard in 1981 and moved up through the ranks as a safety officer, lieutenant and captain before taking the helm as chief in 2009. His accomplishments over that time include scoping for the Marin Life Protection Act, helping to develop the new Main Beach lifeguard headquarters, addressing several oil spills, and reinstating the "Wave Watch" rescue vessel program.
City leaders thanked Snow for his 44 years of service Wednesday and wished him well in his next chapter.

"Kevin exemplifies the professionalism of lifeguarding and instilled that in his team, just as his predecessors instilled it in Kevin," said City Manager Dave Kiff. "I wish Chief Snow the best and look forward to seeing him in retirement. Thank you, Kevin, for your fine service. I will miss you, and I know Laguna Beach Marine Safety will, too."
Kiff named acting chief and Marine Safety Captain Kai Bond as Snow's replacement, highlighting his 29 years of service to the department. The outgoing chief shared the City Manager's enthusiasm for leaving the department in Bond's hands.

"It's been a privilege to work alongside such dedicated and professional captains, marine safety officers, and lifeguards," Snow said. "As I retire, I have full confidence in Kai Bond's ability to lead the department. His extensive experience and unwavering commitment to safety make him the perfect successor."
Bond's experience began as a junior lifeguard at just 8 years old, eventually taking him into rookie and seasonal roles, and up through the ranks to acting chief. He grew up in Laguna Beach and earned a bachelor's degree from California State University Long Beach.
"The last 30 years with the Marine Safety Department have been incredibly rewarding, and I am committed to upholding the high standards of safety and service that our team is known for," Bond said. "I look forward to leading our dedicated lifeguards and ensuring that our beaches remain safe and welcoming for all visitors."
He will take over the role on Aug. 5, and Snow will officially retire on Aug. 18.
