Chilean National Inmate Escapes From Fire Camp, OCDA Says

The search is on for an inmate who escaped from an LA County correctional facility, according to OCDA Todd Spitzer.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — A Chilean national sentenced to prison for his role in a wrong-way head-on crash and burglary escaped from a California Department of Corrections and rehabilitation fire prison camp, the Orange County District Attorney's Office announced.

Alejandro Tobarfuentes and Jorge Navarrecorvalan were arrested on June 8, 2024, after crashing their Mini Cooper head-on into a Toyota Camry while driving northbound in southbound lanes, Spitzer said.

Just before the head-on crash, the pair was also accused of working together to break into a San Juan Capistrano home to steal a safe, designer handbags, and jewelry, he said.

Tobarfuentes, 33, left the Francisquito Conservation Camp, which is located in a mountainous area between Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley, according to corrections officials.

Staff discovered that Tobarfuentes was missing from the facility at 10 p.m. They commenced an emergency count of inmates and confirmed his absence, officials said in a news release.

"We are doing everything we can to hold these criminals accountable and instead of putting them behind bars where they belong, Governor Newsom and the state Legislature are continuing to allow dangerous prisoners opportunities to escape responsibility, knowing the serious risk they post to public safety," Spitzer said in a statement.

Anyone who sees Tobarfuentes or has knowledge of his whereabouts is urged to contact 911 or Special Agent S. Rojas 909-727-1947.
