2 La Jolla Students Receive 2023 National Merit Scholarships

This year, 153 colleges and universities sponsored more than 3,800 Merit Scholarship awards.

LA JOLLA, CA — Seven high school students in San Diego County, including two in La Jolla, received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Monday.

The San Diego area winners were among roughly 750 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. The scholars joined more than 3,000 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in June.

The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

This year, 153 colleges and universities sponsored more than 3,800 Merit Scholarship
awards. Sponsor colleges include 81 private and 72 public institutions located in 42 states and the
District of Columbia.

This is the last group of winners announced in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. In April, the organization announced about 840 recipients of corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships. In May, the organization named 2,500 winners of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships. In June, the organization announced the first group of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award winners.

In all, more than 7,140 award winners will receive scholarships worth nearly $28 million in 2023, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
