In the March 3 presidential primary election, Calvert captured 97,781 votes or 58.2 percent of ballots cast, compared to O’Mara who garnered 38,506 votes or 22.9 percent. The two front runners beat out one other Democrat in the race.
The 42nd District includes the cities of Eastvale, Norco, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Wildomar, Murrieta, and portions of Temecula.
According to his campaign website and statements, Calvert supports tax cuts, job growth, greater border security and preventing “endless amnesties” for undocumented immigrants, infrastructure spending, and national security spending. He’s shown opposition to efforts that address climate change. He has also opposed Obamacare, same-sex marriage, gun safety legislation, and federal funding for abortion.
According to O’Mara’s campaign website, he supports, among other things, wage increases; single-payer Medicare-for-all healthcare; a tax hike on the wealthy; affordable housing; racial justice; comprehensive immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship for undocumented people in the country who do not have a violent criminal history; the Green New Deal to combat climate change; and expanded background checks for gun buyers.
