Suspect In Homicide Investigation Shot By Deputies Near Corona

CORONA, CA — A suspect linked to a homicide near Corona was wounded by deputy gunfire and was being treated at a local hospital, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department announced Thursday evening.

The suspect, whose identity was not released, was hit by deputy gunfire during a shooting investigation that began around 2:28 a.m. Thursday in the 13400 block of Barker Lane in Home Gardens, which is an unincorporated area near Corona.

A caller told the sheriff's department dispatch that he heard gunshots and found a man lying on the ground outside his residence.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found the man who was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.

During the investigation, deputies learned the alleged shooter was hiding inside the Barker Lane home. A search turned up the suspect and "a deputy-involved shooting occurred," the sheriff's department reported.

"The suspect was struck by gunfire and deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived," according to the department.

The suspect was sent to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the agency reported. The relationship, if any, between the alleged shooter and the deceased was not disclosed.

No deputies were injured during the incident.
