Beware the Slenderman is a documentary directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky centered on the Slender Man stabbing of 2014. The film premiered at South by Southwest in March 2016 and was broadcast on HBO on Jan 23. The story of Slender Man is arguably peculiar; a fictional entity created for a 2009 Photoshop contest on online forum Something Awful, mythos surrounding Slender Man eventually expanded by way of fan fiction and forged images depicting the creature. Slender Man is depicted as a tall, faceless man in a black suit with tentacles growing out of his back.
The Girl on the Train (2016)
Cox Communications On Demand
Based on Paula Hawkins' 2015 debut novel of the same name, Tate Taylor's The Girl on the Train stars Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Édgar Ramírez and Lisa Kudrow. The plot follows alcoholic divorcée Rachel Watson (Blunt), who becomes deeply involved in a missing persons investigation. Grossing a worldwide $172 million, the film received mixed reviews, but Blunt's performance earned the actress a nomination at the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards. Peter Travers of Rolling Stones commented that the film "gives away the game faster than the novel, but Emily Blunt digs so deep into the role of a blackout drunk and maybe murderer that she raises Girl to the level of spellbinder."
Nanny McPhee
Cox Communications On Demand
Nanny McPhee, a family comedy-fantasy, is based on Nurse Matilda by Christianna Brand. Directed by Kirk Jones, the film stars Emma Thompson, Thomas Sangster, Colin Firth and Angela Lansbury in the story of one family's relationship with a mysterious nanny (Thompson), who arrives at the family's home—headed by a widowed patriarch and father of seven (Firth)—one dark and stormy night. The plot unfolds with whimsical flare and pedagogic sentimentality. The children initially protest the presence and instruction of Nanny McPhee, but the enigmatic caretaker impresses upon the brood a singular maxim: "When you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me, but no longer need me, then I have to go."
