What to Watch on TV this Weekend: Jenn's Guide

Patch's Jenn Morrell scours the weekend TV listings each week to let you know what's worth watching on the tube.

June 17 – 23, 2016

No matter how tough you may think your week has been, it hasn’t been as bad as Orlando's has been. How much can one city take? In the face of such tragedy and, especially, hate and anger that have been personified in the worst way, our country can only move forward and refuse to give in to fear, despair and the temptation to lose total faith in humanity.

If you’re the praying kind, won’t you join me sending prayers up for the families and friends of the victims, and for the souls of those who were taken too soon? And, if you’re not the praying kind, perhaps you’ll send warm thoughts and wishes for peace and comfort.

The following weekend and week will be rife with coverage of the deaths of Christina Grimmie, the 49 club-goers at Pulse nightclub, and an innocent toddler. Steal your joy where you can, watching uplifting programming with your family.

Here are a few suggestions for the upcoming week of June 17 – 23.

My Cousin Vinny

Friday, June 17 – TVLND – 8 p.m.

I remember the first time I watched this movie, with my college roommates, huddled together in a tiny apartment in Athens, GA. During a time when Singles and Reality Bites were the stories of our lives, My Cousin Vinny was totally different. Hilariously different. All of the characters were fully developed and perfectly cast. And we picked up one-liners that have transcended time. I have met a lot of women along the way whose “clocks were tickin’ like this!” This flick deserves another watch or 10!

Silicon Valley

Sunday, June 19 – HBO – 7 p.m.

So, when NPR did a segment on this show, I listened up. This is exactly my kind of humor. Mike Judge – who is responsible for one of the best and, dare I say, most accurate movies of all time, Office Space – actually was an engineer in Silicon Valley in the ‘80s. He is drawing on those experiences now to create a show that points out the ridiculous, yet believable, culture and personalities of those geeks-turned-tech-gods who were living the life at that time. The show not only pokes a little fun at the over-the-top facility designs in SV, but also showcases how narcissistic and downright entertaining these nerds really could be.

Made by Destruction

Monday, June 20 – SCIENCE – 7:30 p.m.

How better to acknowledge life’s ability to be renewed than to watch repurposing and recycling at its finest. Objects that would, otherwise, be left for the landfill find new purpose, thanks to some really smart engineers and scientists. In this episode, a bronze trophy is born of unneeded wire; joists and floorboards transform into guitars; and handy totes are crafted from unwanted sails. Nifty!

Southern Charm

Monday, June 20 – BRAVO – 8 p.m.

As y’all can imagine, I am drawn to this show as it feels like home. But this South Carolina-based docuseries get juicy and rather scandalous, which will appeal to us all, Yankee or southern. You can follow a few financially “blessed” young professionals as they attempt to navigate life, work and generations worth of their families’ good names. It’s the perfect blend of a little peek into the Old South and a clear view of a few likable – and some not-so-likable – personalities you won’t forget.

America’s Got Talent

Just when you are about to lose all faith in humanity, a group of talented and well-intended humans comes along, hoping to entertain you and move forward by using their God-given talents. This is truly the all-American, feel-good show that we all can get lost in this summer. Even the outtakes of those who might not have had quite the talent they’d thought still will inspire a smile and a chuckle – nothing wrong with that!
