LAMORINDA, CA — BART riders can expect delays of 30 minutes in the area of the Rockridge and Orinda stations Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, as major track work continues.

Free buses are replacing trains this weekend, which is the third of five non-consecutive weekends the BART tracks are shut down between the two stations. Crews are working to replace interlockings, which are an essential part of the system and allow BART to safely move trains from line to line.

The equipment being replaced on the Yellow Line trains—the busiest in the BART system—is decades old and has outlived its design life, according to BART. Riders will enjoy a smoother, safer, more reliable, and quieter ride once the projects are complete.

Yellow line trains run every 30 minutes on shutdown weekends. Riders at the Rockridge Station should anticipate departure delays for normally scheduled weekend trains. On Friday nights preceding each of the weekend shutdowns, the last westbound train from Antioch to Orinda is at 11:14 p.m. After this weekend, the next two shutdowns are scheduled for the weekends of May 27-29 and June 10-11.

To perform this critical work, BART crews will set up lights, generators, excavators, compacting equipment, and other heavy equipment near and on the trackway near Rockridge and Orinda stations during the track closure weekends and overnight on some weekdays.

Some neighbors and nearby businesses will experience noise coming from equipment and crews along with construction lighting at night, according to BART. Noise levels are expected to be like those from past maintenance work in the area.

Some construction will take place during hours when BART trains are not running. Any work that can be completed without disruption to service will be facilitated within these windows, BART said.

More information about the work happening between the Rockridge and Orinda stations can be found on BART's Frequently Asked Questions page and on the project Fact Sheet.
