CENTRAL CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A man in a stolen pickup truck was apprehended by California Highway Patrol officers after he drove recklessly for several miles — then crashed into four cars, the CHP said.

Around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, an officer tried to stop the driver of a Ford F350 on westbound state Highway 4 at Bailey Road Avenue in Pittsburg, CHP Officer Adam Lane told Patch.

The truck's license plate showed it was reported stolen; the driver failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated, Lane said.

"He immediately fled from us, and then continued driving erratically," Lane said.

The CHP officer discontinued the pursuit because of the driver's reckless driving behavior, Lane said.

However, despite not being pursued, the suspect — later identified as George Castro, 20, of Lathrop — continued recklessly driving recklessly as he headed south on Highway 242, then south on Interstate 680, then west on Highway 24, Lane said.

"As the Ford approached Pleasant Hill Road, it failed to slow for stopped traffic and collided into four vehicles in the westbound lanes," Lane said.

The F350 overturned and came to rest within the lanes.

It is alleged that Castro tried to flee the area on foot until he was apprehended by CHP.

Castro was booked into the county jail in Martinez on suspicion of reckless evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing the scene of a traffic collision and suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

No parties involved in the crash were injured, according to the CHP.
