Rheem Boulevard Reopens With Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

From Contra Costa Transportation: The road closure associated with the Rheem Boulevard Landslide Repair and Repaving project is scheduled to reopen to public traffic on Thursday, March 30, at approximately 6:00 pm after a brief ribbon cutting ceremony starting at 5:00 pm to mark the event. The $2.6 million budgeted project could not have been built without the contributions from Summerhill Homes ($934K), Contra Costa Transportation Authority ($729K), Measure K ($533K), and Impact Fees ($390K).

Rheem Boulevard between Fernwood Drive and Via Barcelona has been closed since July 2016 to stabilize an underlying landslide that has been slowly moving over decades and to reconstruct the roadway. The construction method used was a structural retention system consisting of cast-in-drilled- hole (CIDH) piers, horizontal grade beam, tie-backs, and sub-drains (see diagram below). The roadway itself was reconstructed with a new robust structural section engineered with 4-inches of hot mix asphalt (HMA) over 15.5-inches of aggregate base (AB).

Rheem Boulevard will provide an alternative and/or detour route to accommodate scheduled roadway resurfacing work on Moraga Road between Draeger Drive and Saint Mary’s Road. Moraga Police will be conducting extra patrols and radar enforcement on the newly opened Rheem Boulevard and other detour routes during the Moraga Road construction in response to concerns of residents about speeding and potentially reckless drivers on these streets. Officers will be STRICTLY ENFORCING the vehicle code. Drivers should always be careful to obey speed limits and other traffic laws, especially while detours and lane closures are in effect.
