Daily Planner: Library Fun, Youth Camps

It's a good time to exercise your library card this week. Both the Corte Madera and Larkspur libraries will be hosting special events that go beyond the covers of a book.

Victoria Gonzalez drops by the Corte Madera Library on Tuesday, from 3-4 p.m., to help put some pizazz into those plain old book bags. Pre-registration is required. Create a personalized book bag using fabric plus an iron-on appliqué process.

Meanwhile, the Share a Book Program returns to the Larkspur Library on Tuesday. Dogs are brought to the library to encourage children to practice their reading skills with a non-judgemental listener in a low pressure environment. Children are invited to sign-up for an individual 15-minute appointment to read or share a book with a very well-trained dog.

• Everyone should believe in magic, right? Well, children ages 7-10 can get an up-close look at magic and learn the tricks of the trade that amaze audiences. The Magikids Camp offered through the Corte Madera Recreation Department kicks off Monday at 9 a.m. at Neil Cummins Elementary School. The class continues every Monday for six weeks. The fee is $225, with a $10 materials fee to be paid to the instructor at the first class.

• Enjoy race car action on a miniature scale with Corte Madera's weeklong remote-controlled cars and high-tech toys class. The class starts Monday at 9 a.m. Choose from slot car tracks to several different RC vehicles and flight simulators for indoor/outdoor use, scale racing track and mountainous obstacle courses. This class will focus on having fun while learning how to operate, maintain and master your remote controlled hobbies. The fee is $132.50.

• Children who like to tinker with things, who are curious about how things work have the chance this week to build their own robot mechanical arm. The class, offered through Corte Madera Parks and Recreation, begins Monday at 1 p.m. and continues through Friday. There is a $132.50 charge and a $45 materials fee.

• Corte Madera's Parks and Recreation Department will offer basketball and soccer camps for children this week and the week of July 30 at Neil Cummins Elementary School. The soccer camp is for children ages 7-9, while the basketball camp is for young athletes ages 6-10. There is a $185 fee for the five session camps.
