LIVERMORE, CA — The family of Alexys Garcia, a Livermore resident who was killed at 25 by a drunk driver, is hosting a pet food drive for the East Bay SPCA to honor her memory. The drive is being held Friday, on what would have been Lexy’s 33rd birthday.

Alexys loved animals, and volunteered for East Bay SPCA when she was in high school. She also went out of her way to help animals in need, according to emotional Facebook posts from her family. She was also a popular pet sitter.

“There was one time where she found one kitten that had such a bad eye infection that it stumbled into her while it was walking with [its eye] sealed shut, she called me and we went back out and looked for a few hours until we found [its] two siblings, scruffing feral kittens that are hiding out in giant cacti was one of my hardest rescues, but we did it together,” she sister Karyn said in a post.

One of Karyn’s last memories of her sister was a call to ask her if she needed anything for two kittens they’d gotten as consolation for the death of a pigeon she’d tried to care for.

“It is so difficult for me to reconcile that this will be the 8th birthday she is not here to celebrate with us. Our hearts continue to be shattered but that will never stop me from celebrating the beautiful and caring human that she was. Those who were close to her know what a strong bond she had with all animals. In high school she worked at the East Bay SPCA as a volunteer to socialize cats so they would have a better chance of being adopted. To honor her on her birthday this year we invite you to join our family in person if you can, or to donate in her name,” her mother Kinga Garcia wrote.

Alexys’ life was tragically cut short in November 2017 when she and 16-year-old Violet Campbell were passengers in a car driven by an intoxicated driver. The driver, Lauren A. Davis, lost control of the car near Stanley Boulevard. In 2021, Davis pleaded no contest to second-degree murder, and received 15 years to life in prison.

Alexys continues to inspire people to love animals as much as she did. The drive will take place at the Dublin East Bay SPCA at 4651 Gleason Drive on Friday from 2-4 p.m. Guests can either bring donations to the event, or make a donation in her name. The SPCA will also be unveiling the second cat room dedicated to her that day. See here to make a donation online.

"[Alexys] had a way of making a human connection and finding the good in everyone, no matter how different they were from her," her mother told Patch in 2021.
