LIVERMORE, CA — Granada High School math teacher John Thayer was named the 2025 Alameda County Teacher of the Year by the Alameda County Office of Education. Thayer was selected from 19 educators representing 17 school districts. He is now a candidate to be recognized as California State Teacher of the Year.

Thayer has taught for more than 20 years, and describes his philosophy of teaching as “creating spaces for students to succeed in small and big ways, showing them that I believe in them, and waiting for them to teach me how to better teach them.”

He has dedicated his career to making math accessible for all students, according to the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District. He teaches math courses in both English and Spanish that incorporate project-based learning that connects math to real-world applications like bridge design, food truck businesses, and public art projects.

Thayer has also coached English and Spanish debate teams, some of which have advanced to regional and state-level competitions. He also leads college field trips for emergent bilingual students, and works with families through the school's English Learner Advisory Committee.

“It's been incredible feeling all the love after receiving this recognition,” Thayer said in a statement. “It makes me realize that every single person who helps our students– from the classroom to the front office, to the cafeteria– should be celebrated like this. We work hundreds of miracles together every day and I wouldn't want to miss it!”

“I first met John in 2000 when he was my Trigonometry teacher,” said Granada Math Department Chair Julian Avilla, one of Thayer's former students. “Over the last 25 years, I have witnessed first hand his exceptional dedication and passion for teaching. His ability to connect with students and teach them math at all levels is inspiring.”

“Mr. Thayer’s selection as Alameda County’s Teacher of the year is well deserved. John is an impactful educator,” said Granada Principal Clark Conover. “He cares about kids and creates a classroom where students feel empowered to take risks, discover their strengths, and build confidence. Granada is lucky to have a teacher like him.”

“We wish John the very best as he is considered for State Teacher of the Year,” said LVJUSD Superintendent Torie Gibson. “But regardless of that outcome, we are thrilled that John’s exceptional teaching was recognized at the county level. His commitment and impact on our students serves as a model for us all.”

Thayer was honored at the annual Alameda County Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony on Sept. 25.
