TRACY, CA — I-205 was closed for several hours in both directions Tuesday after a tractor-trailer pulling double trailers filled with a mix of gasoline and ethanol flammable liquid jackknifed.

The truck was traveling on I-205 westbound just west of the Alameda County line near Mountain House Road, according to a California Highway Patrol report. At around 1:30 p.m., the left front tandem of the second trailer malfunctioned, causing the big rig to jackknife. The second trailer then overturned, causing three gallons to leak onto the roadway.

Alameda County Fire Department personnel responded and were able to stop the leak, CHP said. No personnel were exposed to fume hazards, and the driver did not sustain any injuries. All traffic in both directions was diverted as hazmat crews responded by offloading the ethanol from the overturned truck.

Crews had to establish a wide safety perimeter because of the dangers of the highly flammable substance. Westbound traffic was diverted at Mountain House Road, while eastbound traffic was diverted to I-580 eastbound, causing major traffic delays.

All lanes had reopened by 11 p.m. Tuesday, CHP said.
