Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- LBUSD reports 173 new COVID-19 cases after its second week of being in session. This number is down from 253 positive student tests after the first week. As of today, there have been 429 confirmed student cases, 23 employee cases, and one vendor case. (LB Post, LBUSD)
- Mega Tip-a-Cop event is a go! On the last Wednesday of this month, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., LB police officers will wait tables for tips. All tips are donations to support Special Olympics Southern California. If you’re ready to support the good cause, have a cop serve you food rather than a warrant, then head to Belmont Shore on that day. Participating restaurants are Legends, Quinn’s Pub & Grill, George’s Greek Café, Domenico’s Italian Restaurant, Blue Windows, and Rance’s Chicago Pizza. (SOSC)
- In a five to four vote, LB City Council members decided that they would not ask Governor Gavin Newsom to veto Senate Bills 9 and 10. As you may remember, these bills are designed to do away with single-family home zoning in favor of multiple housing units on these lots. Supporting the veto were Al Austin, Daryl Supernaw, Stacy Mungo Flanigan, and Suzie Price. (LB Post)
- The Port is getting more congested, which may end up costing it business. At this time, there are 49 ships waiting for an open berth. Another 15 will arrive over the weekend. Carriers are now looking for alternatives that might include Oakland and Portland. (Splash 247)
- Tacos El Sauz at 1616 East Anaheim Street is the hot tip for anyone who loves authentic eats after dark in a diverse setting. Buche, suadero, and tripas are on the menu. Waxing poetically, a reviewer recently referred to the taquería’s parking lot as “a painting at a museum.” (L.A. Taco)
