Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Update on the attempted 2019 LB bombing: On August 11, we talked about the 28-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Reseda who was found guilty on “one count of providing material to support terrorism and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.” The man planned to bomb a political rally “on April 26, 2019, as retribution for the New Zealand mosque shootings that left 51 people dead weeks earlier.” On Monday, he received a 25-year federal prison sentence followed by 20 years of supervised release. (KTLA)
- Long Beach City College began a “safe parking” pilot program this month. It enables students living in their cars to park overnight in a specified parking structure on campus. The program includes “access to showers, restrooms, electricity and wireless internet connection seven nights a week.” Right now, space is limited to 15 students and qualified candidates “must be currently enrolled and cannot have a spouse, partner or children with them in the vehicle.” (LB Post)
- On Monday, LB broke ground for a new affordable housing development at 1500 East Anaheim Street. Featuring 88 units, this structure will also bring a community health and wellness center to Cambodia Town. “Building and maintaining quality, affordable housing options in Long Beach continues to be of top priority,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. (City of LB)
- California State University LB will receive a $10-million grant. Coming from the American Rescue Plan, it is earmarked “to help recruit, train and place more than 700 minority students into California’s public health workforce.” Qualifying candidates are “diverse students seeking certifications, associates, bachelor’s or master’s degrees.” (My News LA)
- Not everyone’s happy about the Election Day holiday the City Council approved. Critics assert that politicians “slipped it into new union contracts with politically influential city employee unions.” They assert that there was no public discussion when council members “gave themselves an additional day off with no reduction in their pay.” Moreover, they noted that there was no “rationale” for the move and there wouldn’t be one until a year later.
