📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) A 48-year-old man was arrested on Monday in the 1800 block of West 25th Street. He was in his driveway and approached by a man. An altercation ensued, and the man ended up “shooting his firearm into the ground, missing the male adult victim,” who then ran away. The shooter was “booked for one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon.” (LBPD)
2) What was going on Tuesday morning on the 91? It turns out that the CHP chased burglary suspects from Walnut into L.A., onto the 210, 5, and then the 91. The driver was determined to get away and kept driving even after losing a tire. Eventually, the BMW rear-ended a big rig, the suspects got out, ran across the 91, and tried to escape. “A felony pursuit like this can result in state prison time of one to three years,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore. (KTLA)
3) The City announced the “15th Annual Bike and Pedestrian Count, one of the longest-running bike count programs in the country.” You can become involved by volunteering. The count happens on October 27 and October 29. Volunteers pick an intersection and sign up for a two-hour shift. “Volunteers manually count bicyclists and pedestrians and record travel behavior, including helmet use and wrong-way riding.” (City of LB)
4) LB Yacht Club members are helping improve the local water quality. We learned on Tuesday that boaters from LB have teamed up with OC Coastkeeper and Cal State marine biologists to increase the numbers of Olympia oysters. In May, they “gathered strings of oyster shells to hang off their docks.” Now, they returned and pulled up the strings. Any Olympia oysters that attached themselves to the strings will be “transferred to their restoration site in the Jack Dunster Marine Biological Reserve.” (The Log)
5) Mark your calendars! There’s construction happening on Market Street from Tuesday to October 18. If you take Long Beach Transit’s Route 192, this means “detours and bus stop closures.” Specifically, the route along “a portion of westbound Market Street, between Atlantic Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard, will be closed.” (Long Beach Transit)
