⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! πŸ€”
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, dueling studies point to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 64.4% don’t like daylight saving time, while 34.8% do. Only 0.7% don’t care one way or the other.

πŸ“° Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. When Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers pulled over a vehicle near Arbor Street and Virginia Avenue early Friday evening, they didn’t know it would be an unusual traffic stop. It turns out the 41-year-old driver was on probation, drove around with a β€œstolen loaded firearm and several rounds of ammunition,” and kept three pounds of meth, another gun and an extended magazine at his motel room. The driver was booked on several charges, with bail set at $35,000. (LBPD)
  2. A resident in his 30s died Monday evening at the Community Hospital campus winter shelter. Officials suspect he died because of a drug overdose, and two other residents say he β€œspent most of his time in his room, where he was known to use opioids.” The residents told reporters they didn’t think shelter staff administered Narcan. Reportedly, First to Serve runs the shelter and should have had 30 boxes of Narcan on hand. The residents didn’t want to be identified, and the nonprofit organization declined to comment on the situation. (Long Beach Post)
  3. DPI Retail of El Segundo sold the El Dorado Shopping Center to Milan Capital Management of Orange for $21.25 million, we learned on Monday. You find the property at the corner of Wardlow Road and Norwalk Boulevard. It currently houses β€œGrocery Outlet, Goodwill Store & Donation Center, Los Alamitos Kids Resale clothing store, Twice Baked Gluten Free Baking Company, Benley Vietnamese Kitchen, AJ Appliance 4 Less, and the Kick It Up Dance school.” (Long Beach Business Journal/paywall)
  4. The Long Beach City Council voted Tuesday to add around 30 new tiny homes to the Multi-Service Center site at 1301 West 12th Street. A grant of $5.6 million will pay for the construction and three years of operation. β€œEach of the modular units will come with furniture, linens, and a private bathroom. Tiny home residents will also have access to three meals a day and other social services.” (Press-Telegram/paywall)
  5. Hear ye, hear ye! The city is looking for local mural artists for a PAID project. The four-way intersection at 15th Street and Chestnut Avenue is due for an overhaul, and officials want four artists to each paint one mural at one corner. The goal is to create bulb-outs that make space for the art and narrow the roads. If you think you have what it takes to beautify the area, submit your proposal to the Arts Council by February 15. With only a few guidelines, the artwork should be β€œuplifting, inspirational, and appealing to children.” (The HiLo)
