32 Cats, 1 Dog Killed In Long Beach Apartment Fire

The unit was significantly damaged and one was resident was displaced, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

LONG BEACH, CA β€” Dozens of foster pets were killed in an apartment fire over the weekend in Long Beach, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 7:15 a.m. Sunday at the Lindenwood Apartment Complex in the 3500 block of Linden Avenue, according to the Long Beach Fire Department. Crews found heavy smoke on the third floor of the apartment building. Firefighters put out the blaze in the unit and stopped the flames from spreading to other units.

The unit was significantly damaged and one was resident was displaced, according to the department. Officials said 32 cats and one dog were killed in the fire. No human injuries were reported.

The resident told firefighters the pets were being fostered for adoption, Fire Capt. Jack Crabtree told City News Service.

A fire investigator was working to determine what caused the fire and where it started.
