Good day, people of Long Beach! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.

We had four more shootings in August. Also, while elected officials are optimistic about the LB budget, unfunded liabilities are the flies in the ointment. Finally, the Coast Guard started construction on a new facility.

First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 84 Low: 66.

Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. We had four more shootings between Tuesday and Wednesday. Officers found casings on the 1400 block of Elm Avenue. At the 400 block of West 20th Street, people in one car shot at people in another car; while both drove away, a third person in a parked car was struck. A vehicle parked in a driveway in the 2000 block of Chestnut was hit. Finally, an adult male was shot in the 1700 block of Lewis Avenue. (LBReport)
  2. LB passed a budget that Mayor Robert Garcia says, “includes no cuts, no deficit, replenishes our reserves and positions Long Beach to continue building back stronger than ever.” However, critics point to “unfunded liabilities” that were left out. Examples include unsafe public walkways, tree trimming, the Queen Mary, and future pension costs. (LB Local News, LB Post)
  3. The Coast Guard began constructing a $35 million, 11,500 square foot cutter support facility at 1001 South Seaside Avenue in San Pedro. The projected completion date is October 2022. (The Log)
  4. Finding industrial real estate is tough in LB. While retailers struggle to stay open, e-commerce has boomed, underscoring the need for warehouse and storage space. At this time, rent for industrial space is about $1.13 per square foot and sales prices might reach $286.14 per square foot. (LB Business Journal)
  5. The Long Beach Creative Group invites submissions from local artists for its November 7 “Ocean” exhibition. If you want to submit a piece, remember that “the works submitted [must] be for sale, 'reasonably priced,' produced in the last five years and be gallery ready.” You have until September 24 to submit your work.
