I'm back with your fresh copy of the Long Beach Daily; today is International Caps Lock Day, which commemorates the death of Billy Mays, an infomercial legend, who is said to have had “caps lock enthusiasm.” Let's get this Tuesday started off right, with a quick dive into everything you need to know about what's happening around town.

Things are heating up, and guns are drawn. Also, did a retired teacher grope a child 25 years ago? Finally, the City is focusing on groundwater pumping rather than desalination.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. The LBPD had a busy weekend. There were four reported shootings on Saturday. They were “near the 3900 block of Anaheim Street” in the afternoon, “near the 2400 block of Cedar Avenue,” in the “area of 27th Street and Cedar Avenue,” and “near the 8100 Block of East Wardlow Road.” (LBPD)
  2. A 73-year-old retired teacher is accused of “groping an eighth-grade girl” 25 years ago at Hughes Middle School. Now suing the Long Beach Unified School District, the 39-year-old plaintiff alleges that the district “didn’t properly handle complaints about the teacher.” The accused former teacher denies the allegations. At the same time, he is “trying to block the public from seeing details of his employment history.” (LB Post)
  3. Fifteen years ago, the cty built a pilot desalination program using an Under Ocean Floor Seawater Intake & Discharge Demonstration System at Junipero Beach. The program ends in May 2023 and will cost $5 million to remove. Work will take place “between Labor Day and Memorial Day.” Experts say the “technology was feasible but not cost effective.” Right now, the city is focusing on groundwater access rather than desalination. (LB Post)
  4. There was a cleanup project that took place around the Jenni Rivera Memorial Park neighborhood on Saturday. Present were Public Works’ Clean Team as well as members of the “Sunny Central Neighborhood Association, Love Beyond Limits, Al-Shareef Mosque, Developing Future Leaders” and residents. (Suely Saro)
  5. Mark your calendars! Long Beach is getting access to real Jamaican food. Ackee Bamboo is taking over 3222 E. Broadway, which used to be the Café Piccolo. Opening may be late September or early October. Right now, you would have to travel to L.A.’s Leimert Park location to enjoy “ackee and saltfish,” baked “oxtails,” and other Jamaican specialties.
