Low clouds and fog, then sun. High: 75 Low: 56.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Carson Stink Update: It still stinks. On Wednesday, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors declared a local emergency. However, it wants you to know that it has nothing to do with any health concerns, but rather with the goal to shake loose more resources. At this point, thousands of neighbors in and around “Carson, West Carson and portions of Gardena, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Wilmington and Long Beach” have been affected. So far, officials have already spent $5.4 million with little to show for it. (NBC)
  2. There was a home fire Wednesday. Beginning around 5 p.m. on the 400 block of Bellflower Boulevard near PCH, it took the LBFD about an hour to knock it down. The origins of the fire were on the third floor and moved upward. Once again, firefighters saved not just humans, but also pets. Three firefighters were injured and suffered from smoke inhalation. (LB Post)
  3. Do you know what else gets the friendly folks on the Nextdoor app riled up? The hit-and-miss performance of street sweeping. Finally, on Wednesday, there was an acknowledgment that some street sweeping routes have been missed for weeks at a time. The reasons given are “COVID-19, shorter hours and inefficient equipment.” And what will the City do about this? In addition to maybe filling positions, it will “try to educate residents about disposing of their leaves and other debris properly, rather than pushing it into the gutter.” (LB News)
  4. The LBPD announced Wednesday that it received a $380,000 grant from the Office of Traffic Safety. The PD plans to use the money "to reduce deaths and injuries on Long Beach roads." Popular tools to this end are "patrols with emphasis on awareness and education" as well as officer training. (LBPD)
  5. Supply chain issues because of the bottleneck at the ports of Long Beach and L.A. are continuing. Pharmacies across the Southland are now speaking up about shortages of “wheelchairs, walkers, and other critical medical equipment.” In a Wednesday report, one pharmacist went on record being “terrified that the persistent crisis at the ports will mean things will eventually filter down to pharmacies running critically low on life-saving medications.” (ABC)
