📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) made seven arrests due to increased patrolling after the recent string of 23 commercial burglaries in the city. Suspects were caught in burglaries at 71 Aquarium Way, 809 West 15th Street, the 1100 block of East Market Street and 455 East Ocean Boulevard. “Officers said they believe three different groups are responsible for the series of burglaries” they originally set out to investigate, and will continue to search for them. (Long Beach Patch)
- Were you caught up in Friday’s crazy police pursuit? It all started as an attempted reckless driving traffic stop in Chino. The 44-year-old driver fled, headed to the Shell at 1550 East Ontario Street in Corona, and carjacked a truck. Next, he headed to Anaheim, took the freeway, and got off around Woodruff Avenue. He took that down toward Lakewood, where he thankfully stopped for students from Mayfair High School who were crossing the street. The chase continued to Harbor City and a crash at the intersection of Western Avenue and 253rd Street. The suspect tried to carjack another vehicle, but the police arrested him on 252nd Street. (Long Beach Post)
- Mayor Rex Richardson appointed Lucius Martin to the newly created role of “deputy mayor for economic development” on Thursday. Martin was head of Long Beach’s Economic Development Department and is expected to focus on the “Grow Long Beach” initiative that envelops “aerospace, goods movement, tourism, education and health care.” We are still waiting to hear whom the mayor will appoint as deputy mayor for housing. (Newsbreak)
- The city’s Mobile Assistance Center (MAC) has a set schedule for reaching out to the homeless between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Locations of interaction are the Los Altos Market Center, Houghton Park, the Billie Jean King Main Library, and the corner of Bellflower Boulevard and 23rd Street. As of February 27, MAC interacted with 414 unhoused neighbors, connected 204 to services, and reunited one woman with family after “city employees saw her on a missing person's report.” (Office of Mayor Rex Richardson)
- Did you know that we have a Long Beach Pinball League? Did you also know that you can participate, if you like? Each Tuesday, the fans of the retro game head to the Long Beach Beer Lab at 7:30 p.m. to play. So far, an estimated 30 players meet at the venue’s easterly corner, where 10 machines await the friendly competition. “People make friends here,” one of the organizers says. Best of all, the league is open to players of all skill levels! (Signal Tribune)
