The latest from Long Beach, delivered straight to your inbox.

(Patch Media)

Hey, neighbors! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.

Although the LBPD advertised its DUI checkpoint, it still made seven DUI arrests. Also, a 7-11 seems to have a bull’s eye on its doors. Finally, if you have always dreamed of living in a million-dollar house, you might be able to afford a two-bedroom, two-bathroom home near 37th and Lemon Avenue. Wow!

First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy throughout the day. High: 77 Low: 67.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Last Friday, the LBPD set up a DUI checkpoint at PCH and Daisy Avenue. It ran from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. In this timeframe, officers counted 824 vehicles, engaged 243 drivers, and arrested 7 for DUI. Another 17 received citations for driving without a license. (City of LB)
  2. Early Tuesday morning, an adult male robbed the 7-11 at Palo Verde and Atherton. The man had a handgun and fled before officers could get there. This same 7-11 was robbed in 2019. (LBReport)
  3. California Heights real estate prices are off the charts. One home recently sold for $1,000 a square foot, putting properties in this area well into the $1-million range. (LB Post)
  4. The Bloomberg Cities Network by Johns Hopkins University recognized LB for its use of recovery plan funds to benefit a diverse city. It pointed to the City’s commitment to investing in African-American, Latinx, and Cambodia Town neighborhoods in the form of investment grants, small business grants, and fiscal recovery funds. (Bloomberg Cities)
  5. Let Them Breathe is planning a mask-choice rally for today’s LBUSD School Board Meeting. The group seeks to advocate against mask mandates and encourages attendees to speak at the meeting. A similar protest in Los Angeles turned violent, and one person went to the hospital with stab wounds. As you may know, the LBUSD requires students and staff members to wear masks indoors.
