Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. On Friday, at around 2:12 p.m., “a steel frame collapsed at the new Fire Station 20.” It trapped a construction worker at Pier D. F was transported to the hospital. You may remember that Fire Station 20 is a two-story structure currently under construction. It will have a floating dock and fire boat bay enclosure. (LB Post)
  2. It’s official, we learned Friday that East Long Beach is getting a senior living facility at 3340 Los Coyotes Diagonal! The venue will have “86 units that are a mixture of studio, one-and-two-bedroom units.” Developed by Sunrise Senior Living, “50 (units) are allocated for the assisted living portion of the project and 36 for the memory care portion.” Critics were concerned about “the use of the adjacent alleyway separating the property from a former Ralphs grocery store building.” (LB Business Journal)
  3. Beginning with your June 1 bill, you will notice a 2.54% reduction in water costs. The Water Department’s decision to cut rates comes in the aftermath of the state Supreme Court’s declaring Measure M unconstitutional. The reduction is in addition to the $100 rebate you might already have seen on your latest bill. (Press-Telegram)
  4. Is there room in your heart and home for a bunny or two? You are in luck! The Bunny Barn at LB Animal Care Services recently welcomed 14 of these adorable creatures. You can visit “Long Beach Animal Care Services without an appointment Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.” (LB Post)
  5. There’s a new chicken sandwich in town! Chix Nashville Hot Chicken at 2211 Palo Verde Avenue has been in business for about a month now. We learned Thursday that it’s the first LB location for this chain. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich is the headliner, but there are plenty of other chicken dishes on the menu. (Beach Comber)

  • A Los Altos-Britton Drive neighbor is recommending fly catcher bags. No more flies in the backyard. They are by Blackflag or generic at Lowe’s and Billings. (Nextdoor)
  • A neighbor in the Bluff Heights area is trying to order some things from a Swedish website, but they don’t understand Swedish. Is there anyone in the neighborhood who speaks the language and can help them figure out what they are doing? (Nextdoor)
