Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Another day, another sewage spill. This one originated in a grease-clogged sewer line in Paramount on Monday, when “30,000 to 40,000 gallons of sewage” poured into the L.A. River. Swimmers are cautioned to stay out of the ocean waters until further notice. (Patch)
  2. On Friday, the LBPD’s South Division set up a DUI checkpoint at 7th Street and Locust Avenue. It ran from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. During this time, 600 vehicles went through the area. The PD screened about half of the drivers, handed out nine citations, and arrested two individuals “on suspicion of driving under the influence.” (LB Post)
  3. The Long Beach Unified School District is considering the adoption of new secondary history/social science textbooks and support materials. To get a look at them, the school district will put them on display from March 11 to March 25. An online link will be posted on that day; if you want to go in person, head to Textbook Services by appointment. (LB Schools)
  4. Have you always wondered what it would feel like to ride in the pace car at a car race? The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach wants to give you an opportunity to win and do just that! You can enter online starting Wednesday. The cut-off for entries is March 25 at 11:59 p.m. Good luck! (Locale Magazine)
  5. Panxa Cocina at 3937 East Broadway will host a one-day tasting event focusing on Filipino cuisine. Taking place on Tuesday, on the menu will be eight dishes including “creative takes on Filipino staples like lumpia, ginataang tahong (coconut milk sautéed mussels), pork sisig and adobong kangkong.” Tickets cost $60 and are going fast!
