Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- A fire broke out at a North LB 65-unit apartment building on Thursday around 1:30 p.m. It turned into a three-alarm fire on the 2800 block of East Artesia Boulevard, off the 91 Freeway. There were “multiple partial roof collapses” and “all black smoke.” Scuttlebutt suggests that the fire started in a car and jumped to the structure, but there’s no confirmation. (LB Post)
- The City is reviving Stage 2 of the Water Department’s water shortage plan. You may remember it from May 2015. On Thursday, commissioners voted to return to the two-day-per-week watering restriction. “Starting June 1, residents in Long Beach will be restricted to outdoor irrigation on Tuesdays and Saturdays through Sept. 30.” Besides that, there are “bans on outdoor watering within 48 hours of rain, washing down sidewalks or other hard surfaces without a pressurized cleaning device, or washing vehicles with a hose that doesn’t have a shutoff switch.” (LB Post)
- On May 7, the Gerald Desmond Bridge “was officially retired in a special ceremony with Desmond family members in attendance.” The bridge originally opened in 1968 and connected the city and Terminal Island. It was decommissioned in October 2020. (Random Lengths News)
- There’s another reason to visit the Bixby Village Golf Course. Crack Burgers by Dave Trepanier is an attraction that’s bringing hungry golfers and others to the “small building just off the parking lot.” As of Thursday, $12 buys you a “thick and hefty” patty that’s been attracting five-star Yelp ratings. He’s open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Dirty is a must-try. (L.A. Eater)
- Do you love penguins? Have you already watched all the documentaries that your streaming service offers? The Aquarium of the Pacific has a solution! As of Thursday, there’s now an around-the-clock live cam in the June Keyes Penguin Habitat that houses the Magellanic penguins. And, if you watch now, you can see Dee and Admiral Fancy Pants taking care of four eggs! (NBC)
