⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! πŸ€”
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, there are dueling studies pointing to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 63.4% don’t like daylight saving time, while 36.6% do.

πŸ“° Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. A murderer's on the loose! Wednesday afternoon, an adult male was shot to death β€œin the alley near the 700 block of Broadway Court.” At the time, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) went on record stating it was likely a targeted shooting and not a random crime. Stay tuned for updates. (Patch)
  2. To keep sewage from being dumped on Long Beach streets, the city proposes to develop a sewage dump site at St. Louis Avenue and 32nd Street. The goal is to lease the Utilities Department-owned property and β€œinstall RV hookups, so homeless residents can safely unload waste from their motor homes or campers and refill their water tanks.” The Utilities Commission has to approve the proposal, which would allow the city to lease the space for one year. Wednesday’s report suggests this is the first of several sites the city wants to propose for RV hookups. (Long Beach Post)
  3. A shoutout to Julie Spacht! The retired engineer already spent more than a year volunteering at the St. Mary Medical Center on Linden Avenue to brighten patients and visitors’ days with her beautiful French horn music. β€œShe hopes that her soothing music will help distract people from the pains and stresses they may be experiencing.” Thank you! (BeachComber)
  4. The Artesia Great Boulevard project started in earnest with a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday. For drivers, this means that the three-mile stretch between Harbor Boulevard and Downy Avenue is best avoided. The Granite Construction Company of Watsonville received $36 million to oversee the work. The improvements should take about 15 months to complete. (Press-Telegram/paywall)
  5. While we’re on the topic of construction, the commercial building at 7th Street and Pine Avenue may be replaced by a residential project with seven stories and 24 apartments. Reportedly, the movers and shakers behind the plan are the folks at Beach City Capital from Hermosa Beach. As of Wednesday, the same developer already has approval on a 69-unit project at Pine Avenue and 10th Street. (LA Urbanize)
