🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 43.7% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 29.6% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 1.4% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 25.4% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.

📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

1) On Friday, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) arrested a 26-year-old Carson resident near East Broadway and Pine Avenue. Officers noticed a stolen vehicle and a man close by. “During the course of the investigation, officers discovered that the male subject had stolen the vehicle a few days prior, and was also in possession of a large quantity of marijuana, with the intent to sale.” He is under arrest with a bail set for $285,000 on “one count of felony driving and taking a vehicle without consent and one count of possession of marijuana greater than 28.5 grams.” (LBPD)

2) Remember when ships were lined up to get into the port? Since then, shippers have diverted some cargo to the East Coast. We learned on Friday that Long Beach Port had a 24% drop in containerized imports in October. Year over year, October presented a 16.6% reduction in imports. However, year to date, the Port of Long Beach has moved 1.5% more cargo. “Further softening is expected in the months ahead.” (gCaptain)

3) If you’ve been to Timmons of Long Beach’s service department, you know about the Toy Jam. It’s a year-round campaign for new toys. On Friday, it was delivery day. “Pediatric patients at MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital, Long Beach received car-loads of gifts and toys from employees at Timmons of Long Beach for their 22nd Annual Toy Jam.” This donation helps the facility give young patients developmentally appropriate toys and activity opportunities. (Long Beach Post)

4) The Long Beach State men’s basketball opener on Sunday resulted in a 70-57 loss to Montana State. The team played at the Walter Pyramid with an enthusiastic crowd in attendance. “The Beach got a lift from two of their returners in Joel Murray and Aboubacar Traore,” but the Bobcats secured an early lead. The Beach will play St. Katherine at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Pyramid. (Long Beach State)

5) Mark your calendars! This Saturday is the annual FREE Youth Fishing Derby at El Dorado East Regional Park. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and “offers a unique experience for youth to enjoy outdoor recreation, learn to fish, get expert fishing tips and have opportunities to win prizes like fishing gear and gift cards.” Poles and tackle to borrow will be on site for kids who don’t have their own. Note that anyone over age 16 needs to have a fishing license! (City of Long Beach)
