📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. On Monday, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) arrested a 33-year-old man as a suspect in the December 20 death of an individual who was found “off the roadway near the intersection of 49th Street and Del Amo Boulevard.” Monday’s arrest occurred “near the 3800 block of Long Beach Boulevard,” and the suspect is booked on one count of murder. (LBPD)
  2. Malfunctioning doors closed — quite literally — the Mark Twain Library at 1401 East Anaheim Street on Tuesday. “The automatic main front doors of the building have been malfunctioning since last week . . . (and) underwent repairs last week after malfunctioning similarly, but the repair did not hold.” Library services officials were concerned for the safety of patrons. (Long Beach Post)
  3. Vast is coming to Long Beach! The company, which is on the cutting edge of developing artificial gravity space stations, will fit in perfectly with the area already known as “Space Beach.” We learned on Tuesday that the relocation of its headquarters will take advantage of the “city's Globemaster Corridor Specific Plan, which will help align and reimagine the commercial and industrial area that used to focus on specific aviation manufacturing.” (Vast)
  4. If you’re looking for something to do on January 20, consider attending the Great American Songbook fundraiser at the Carpenter Center, 6200 East Atherton Street. You can dine on stage and then participate in the annual sing-along to everyone’s favorite show tunes. “General admission is $125 a person; a VIP table of 10 is $1,500.” (Press-Telegram/paywall)
  5. The Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) will host a community meeting at Browning High School on January 23. Visit the location at 2180 Obispo Avenue at 6 p.m. on that day to “learn about upgrades planned under Measure Q, and share your ideas for prioritizing renovation projects throughout LBUSD.” There’ll be food! (LBUSD)
