Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Update: Do you remember the 12-year-old child who was assaulted on the bus, and nobody stepped in to help? The LBPD has made an arrest in the “area of Atlantic Area and San Antonio Drive.” The suspect is a 36-year-old man and is booked “on one count of child cruelty, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of battery, one count of unruly behavior on public transportation, and one count of battery on public transportation.” (ABC 7, Fox 11)
  2. Update: A suspect was arrested in the shooting deaths of two adult males in the 100 block of East Anaheim Street. The shooting occurred on August 5. The suspect is a 22-year-old man who is currently in the Orange County Jail on a different charge. He will be transferred to LB under an arrest warrant for "two counts of murder, one count of ex-felon with a firearm, and one count of ex-felon in possession of live ammunition." LBPD does not yet have a motive. (LBPD)
  3. LB is experiencing a nurse shortage. At Community Hospital, patients “are being held in the ER, waiting for a bed in the intensive care unit or medical-surgical unit or the telemetry unit.” San Diego appears to be enticing nurses to work there with offers of $2,500 per shift, “which could easily net them $10,000 or more per week.” St. Mary Medical Center and Long Beach Memorial, along with Community Hospital, are offering incentives to nurses. (LB Post)
  4. The second location for the tremendously popular Little Coyote Pizza has opened. It allows for patio seating at 3500 Los Coyotes Diagonal. Guests enjoy pizzas, but also subs and salads. There is talk of expanding the menu. Scuttlebutt suggests chicken wings and similar fare. (Eater L.A.)
  5. Khmer Girls in Action is a youth organization that has supported the Department of Health and Human Services’ COVID-19 education campaign with an art contest. The artwork shows different takes on the importance of vaccination. You can see the artwork on the organization’s website. (KGALB)
