📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Did you sit in the dark Wednesday evening? You weren’t alone. Southern California Edison was alerted to a power outage around 7:20 p.m. and determined it affected 4,307 customers. Most were located in the southeastern part of the city, including Belmont Shore and Belmont Heights. Power came back on by 10 p.m., but there’s no word what caused the outage. (Long Beach Post)
- More rain is coming to Long Beach this weekend. Officials warn of “another surge of atmospheric river (coming) toward California by Saturday morning.” Even if you made it relatively unscathed through the last few storms, remember that there’s a cumulative effect “likely to cause impacts larger than the storms themselves might cause.” Reports mention gusty winds, rainfall and renewed flooding. If you’re anywhere near the peninsula, get your sandbags. (Patch)
- Have you already selected a high school for your middle schooler? Applications for Long Beach’s high school choice open February 15 with a February 24 deadline. If you’d like to preview some of the campuses affiliated with the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), Lakewood HS offers an open house on Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the other schools follow suit on different days, all the way up to Renaissance HS, which ends the process on February 8. (LBUSD)
- It’s not too late to pick one — or more — volunteer options for Monday. Examples of possible tasks include pressure-washing “the sidewalks in the Westside Santa Fe business district,” packing kindness kits that will be handed out during the upcoming homeless count, and beautifying MacArthur Park. Sign up today! (Leadership Long Beach)
- If you have a taste for the finer things in life, you owe it to yourself to head to Roxanne’s on Sunday for Whiskey Wonderland. It’s a six-hour, immersive whiskey-tasting experience complete with a “30-Year Fuji Single Grain Whiskey, one of the rarest releases of 2022,” a souvenir Jackrabbit Whiskey bottle, classes, music, and a grazing table. Best of all, “a portion of event sales go to LB Jazz Angels to help inner-city youth enjoy the wonders of jazz.” (EventBrite)

🖊️ From my notebook:
- "⚠️ Please be advised that while we make every effort to collect all trees 🎄 left out on Saturday, January, 7, the volume of trees placed out for collection is often more than Long Beach Recycles can handle in one day. Any areas missed will be collected throughout the rest of the week." (Long Beach City via Facebook)
- Our Naples neighbor warns: "Our car was broken into. - Please remember to keep your doors locked and keep an eye on security cameras." (Nextdoor)
