Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- On Monday evening, shortly before 8 p.m., the LBFD was called to the Belmont Pier, where witnesses reported that someone “jumped off the west side of the pier and did not resurface.” Rescue Boat 2 deployed a PLS buoy, and a diver went to work. They found the individual in 25 feet of water, brought them ashore, and took them to the hospital. There was no word about the patient’s condition. (LBFD)
- On Tuesday evening, around 11:54 p.m., the LBPD responded to the 1400 block of Walnut Avenue where a 30-year-old man was accused of violating a restraining order. He was detained, and the PD then received a report from a stabbing victim who implicated the same man in the assault. He “was booked on one count of assault with a deadly weapon and a restraining order violation. Bail was set at $30,000.” (LBPD)
- When the City Council met on Tuesday, members identified 27 streets that will be “prioritized for repaving and resurfacing in fiscal year 2023.” They include South Street from Jaymills to Atlantic avenues, East 49th Street from Long Beach Boulevard to Locust Avenue and Obispo Avenue from 4th to 7th streets. Councilmember and mayoral candidate Suzie Price responded to the list with, "what’s a girl gotta do to get Studebaker paved around here?" Indeed. (Signal Hill Tribune)
- Another issue the City Council discussed and approved is a “$32 million project that could further improve water quality in the Colorado Lagoon by connecting it to the Marine Stadium channel.” The proposed ground-breaking will be in the fall, and the project will likely take about two years to complete. (LB Post)
- Mark your calendars! The PD will host another Etch & Catch event on June 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Be sure to register as soon as possible to have your VIN etched into the metal of the catalytic converter. (LBPD)
