📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

1) The LBPD is looking for a black Chevy sport utility vehicle. They believe it was involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Thursday at PCH and Temple Avenue. According to reports, the Chevrolet traveled west on PCH when it struck a pedestrian. (LBPD)

2) The avian flu is in Long Beach! The city announced on Thursday that it had confirmed three cases of avian flu “in two Canadian geese and one Black-crowned Night-Heron near El Dorado Park.” There were other sick and dead birds in the area that have not been tested. If you’re one of my neighbors with backyard chickens, “remove water and food sources that feed wild birds.” (City of LB)

3) A shoutout to Avery Peck, the Long Beach Poly freshman who finished the Moore League girls’ varsity race on Thursday in 18.59 minutes! She was 90 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor at Signal Hill’s Discovery Well Park meet. She won the league meet and a team title for the Jackrabbits girls. You know what she said? “I like hills, so I enjoyed that course . . . today was just getting some good hills in my legs, not going all out.” Wow! (The562.org)

4) Are you planning to head to Bixby Knolls on Sunday? If not, please reconsider! The Taste of Bixby Knolls will feature 29 participating restaurants in an event that organizers describe as “First Friday on steroids.” Bring the family to Atlantic Avenue and walk from Bixby Road to San Antonio Drive. As always, the Big Red Bus will shuttle visitors free of charge when walking isn’t your thing. Of course, if you’re like me, you’ll be at George’s 50s Diner for the vintage car show. (The HiLo)

5) Mark your calendars! (If you haven’t done so, you’ll have to buy a 2023 calendar.) The Long Beach Opera announced its 2023 season, which officially begins on February 18 featuring Kate Soper. A March 4 production will take place at the Rancho Los Cerritos, so get your tickets early. The other events also underscore the opera’s ability to transcend its historical importance by embracing new media. (Long Beach Opera)
