⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! πŸ€”
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, there are dueling studies pointing to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue?

πŸ“° Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Starting today, February 1, and lasting until the same time next year, Long Beach Transit will put into place detours for routes 51, 61 and 141. While construction is happening on Artesia Boulevard between Susana Road and Downey Avenue, look for signs at the bus stops directing you to β€œalternative boarding locations.” If you’re tech-savvy, download the Moovit app for this information. (Long Beach Transit)
  2. Are you a mover and shaker in the local business improvement district? The city wants you to host special events and create β€œan environment that attracts more people into local businesses.” City grants totaling $100,000 are available to be shared among the locations, which include downtown, Zaferia, 4th Street, Belmont Shore and Bixby Knolls. (City of Long Beach)
  3. A week ago, the friendly folks at Go Active LB hosted a bike light giveaway event at Junipero Beach. Volunteers were on the bike path after dark with signs in four languages. advertising the free bike lights. Seventy cyclists took them up on the offer. β€œNot only do bike lights keep bicyclists visible, they are required at night by law.” (Go Active LB)
  4. You can own a piece of Long Beach history – for $1.075 million. The property in question is a home at 326 West 10th Street. It was built in 1887 by the Bixby family as a parsonage on Cedar Avenue and 3rd Street. In fact, the home was moved four times in its 126-year history. It stayed at 7th Street and Pacific Avenue for 85 years, but was moved again when the Volta Apartment project came along. Insiders call it β€œvirtually a new house, with little memory of the past wrapped in a historic Victorian home with decades of stories to tell.” (Long Beach Post)
  5. Bixby Knolls will be ground zero for a two-day Black History & African Marketplace Celebration on February 3 and 4. At its heart will be the African American Cultural Center at 4313 Atlantic Avenue. In addition to the marketplace and exhibits will be β€œspoken word and dance performances and workshops.” (Press-Telegram/paywall)
