🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 42.9% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 29.9% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 1.3% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 26% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) There was a shooting in the 1500 block of West Willow Street on Tuesday evening at around 6:19 p.m. A man and woman were arguing, the man pulled a gun and shot at her, but he hit a bystander instead. The gunshot wound is not life-threatening. “The male suspect and female subject fled the area prior to officers' arrival.” (Long Beach Police Department)
2) Election Update: The Los Angeles County registrar’s office presented the latest tally on Tuesday, and there are no significant changes. It looks like Megan Kerr will take over for council member Stacey Mungo in District 5. Besides that, Vice Mayor Rex Richardson is the Long Beach mayor-elect. The other results were in keeping with the prior numbers. (Press-Telegram)
3) On Tuesday, the Long Beach City Council approved the River Park Development along the Los Angeles River between the 405 and Wardlow. The development “will include 74 two-story single-family homes, 99 two-story row townhomes, and 53 carriage townhomes.” Twelve units will be set aside for homebuyers with “an annual household income of $59,500 or less for a family of four.” Because of the site cleanup — it used to treat oil wastewater — the project may take until 2026 to complete. Critics say that the space “needs environmental justice, not a gated community.” (Long Beach Post)
4) The mission of the Long Beach Youth Chorus is to “develop the appreciation of choral music and musical talent among young people from diverse backgrounds in a mutually supportive environment.” We learned on Monday that the Youth Chorus was awarded its 501(c)(3) certification, which identifies it as a nonprofit. You can hear the singers, who are between 11 and 18 years old, on December 4 at 2:30 p.m., when they perform at Grace First Presbyterian Church, or on December 16, when the chorus presents its winter concert. (Press-Telegram, Long Beach Youth Chorus)
5) Remember when we talked about the Press-Telegram’s Scary Stories Contest for students of the Long Beach Unified School District? The winners were announced last Thursday. They are Mason Baughfman of Los Cerritos Elementary School and Olive Madison of Patrick Henry Elementary School; Kaya Sangkarat of Bancroft Middle School and Eliana Hernandez of Stephens Middle School; and Anela Angeles of Poly won the high school contest. Congratulations! (Long Beach Schools)
