Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Carson Stink Update: As of Monday, more than 1,300 residents have moved into hotel rooms because of the stink that has been ongoing for about a month now. One family has had enough. They have vowed to “sue every company that could be responsible for the health hazard.” Right now, they have Marathon Petroleum in their crosshairs for allegedly “discharging hydrogen sulfide directly into the Dominguez Channel, causing the smell to worsen.” In the meantime, the City of Carson is considering dredging the channel. (CBS)
- SWAT thwarted a burglary in progress on Tuesday. It was taking place in the 1300 block of Gaylord Avenue, which is a predominantly commercial area. After five hours on the scene, “police had multiple people handcuffed on a rooftop.” (LB News)
- The City of Long Beach announced Monday that dog owners should get their pets vaccinated for “CIV H3N2 or simply the dog flu.’ Although officials concede that “there are currently no reported cases of canine influenza or leptospirosis in Long Beach,” the County has seen outbreaks since the middle of July. Therefore, if you take your doggie to kennels or parks, a vaccination could prevent a potentially serious sickness if your dog encounters an infected canine. (City of LB)
- Do you love to hunt for a good bargain among used books? Do you collect recipe books? Then you need to know about the Cooks Bookery, which is a pop-up at the Bixby Park Farmers’ Market. Visit there every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. “I think you can learn a lot. I think it enriches your cooking to have cookbooks,” says owner Jeffrey Nelson. (The HiLo)
- Will the L.A. vaccine mandate affect the way LB does business? On Monday, the AP reported that “while not required, Long Beach officials ‘strongly recommend’ restaurant owners require vaccine verification for indoor dining.” Business owners aren’t sure they want to jump on board, fearing harassment of their workers by patrons.
